Job Summary

Rocket Science VFX is currently seeking a Systems Administrator to join their downtown Toronto studio. The Systems Administrator will monitor and maintain the computer systems of the studio and provide problem diagnosis and technical support for the users in a mixed Windows/Mac/Linux environment. Candidates with a Visual Effects background or understanding and a willingness to learn are highly desirable.  

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Monitoring and maintaining computer systems and networks; Provide friendly face to face support for Artists using Linux and Windows
  • Maintaining backups of key computer systems;
  • Administer network switches, network storage and associated tape backup, virtual server Infrastructure, email technologies, and firewall. User support and troubleshooting;
  • Troubleshooting system and network problems and diagnosing and solving hardware or software issues;
  • Replacing or upgrading computer parts as required;
  • Setting up new users' accounts and profiles and dealing with password issues;
  • Maintain server room and facility environmental and monitoring equipment;    
  • Maintain floating license servers; 
  • Monitor performance metrics, usage and scalability of servers and render nodes;
  • Support workstation management, imaging, and configuration;
  • Set up, move and install workstations to meet production requirements; Calibrate artist monitors; 
  • Installing upgrades and version management of 3rd party applications;
  • Documentation of system installations, configurations, policies and controls;
  • Planning, procuring and implementing large scale server and storage solutions;

Qualifications and Skills

  • Post-secondary education in Computer Science and/or Information Technology 
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience required in systems and network administration
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must
  • Ability to work independently, multi-task and prioritize tasks is an essential part of the position
  • Experience or certification in Windows/Linux platforms
  • Windows Server OS and Active Directory
  • Ability to conduct System optimization and a solid grounding in storage and networking concepts 
  • Experience working in TV or post production industry  
  • Experience in the installation, configuration and troubleshooting of relevant software packages including Max, Maya, Houdini, VR Ray, and others is desirable 
  • Familiarity with version control systems.
