RE: Tape backup for small shop

just wanted to throw in that you need at least a 1Gb line to feed a LTO3 drive properly.

you may have to bump up your lines if you want to run LTO4, that may increase your costs a bit

:)

Thank you VERY much for that in-depth reply. The storage that needs backing up is XSan on OSX and we'll be adding a linux based NAS soon, so your recommendations sound well suited.

Thanks again

That's a great question and I'm not sure of the answer. We're willing to go with some manual process ie. no tape loader, to save on costs but at the end of the day, the data needs to be secure enough such that if our san goes down, we have the data in a form that can reliably be restored. We are a small shop, so being able to online the backup in 1-2 days for a catastrophic failure is reasonable - we don't need to worry about 100+ artists twittling thumbs and costing us $20k/day.

At my studio, we have < 10TB of storage, with a given project using < 1.5 TB over the span of a 4-6 weeks. I'd love to afford a tape robot system where I can plug 10 tapes in and have it cycle them, but it's not in the budget right now. Any suggestions on ratios of tape size to daily delta/weekly delta? Other than day1 when we inject a few hundred GB of source material, we generate < 20GB of data from renders, comp and editorial. LTO sounds like the standard, but LTO3 and 4 seem to be overkill considering the tapes will probably be 75% at the end of a week.

Thanks
