For some reason, when rendering a Maya job using Mental Ray for rendering, some our render machines will pull two licenses.... randomly.... inconsistently.... does
not matter if it's dual quad core or single quad core machine.
Here are more details:
Version of Maya = maya2009-x64
Below render130 is pulling 1 MayaMRFMCompletef and 1 MayaMRFMUnlimitedf:

I had the same issue and has to setup mentalray pools for different versions. On our case for mentalray, setup your render pool for license -1 number of nodes…. (we have 10 lincenses, so 9 nodes) Luckily it does not count towards the number of CPUs of you nodes… so if you have a node with 4 cores, that node will take only 2 licenses, but render 4 frames
at a time.

Are you running version 11.5 of FLEX? The copyright message on the lmstat is showing me that you may be running an older version. That would be the first thing to check.

Hey Bill, no there was only one job running on render130 when looking in RUSH. This has been the case several times with different render nodes randomly.

He's probably referring to MR standalone. Once again, it appears you are not running the correct version of FLEX for 2009. Upgrade your version of FLEX and see if the problem persists!

Upgrade your license server! While the older version may work most of the time, it is not the supported version.

He's probably referring to MR standalone. Once again, it appears you are not running the correct version of FLEX for 2009. Upgrade your version of FLEX and see if the problem persists!

Due to licensing restrictions.. we can only use a certain number of nodes for particular applications (AE plugins, mentalray, Cinema4D). On the case of MayaMentalRay
we only own 10 render licenses. We use Smedge, and with that app we can specify render pools. So only an specific number of nodes are allowed to render mentalray. What we find out after several tests, is that we can only have 9 nodes (10 render licenses – 1 client license) on the mentalray render pool.

Ahhh I see what you mean I think. In the case of Maya2009 (not sure for Maya2010) what happens is if an artist is using maya interactively, then you can use the MFRM license only on that machine. So lets say you have 10 Maya licenses and therefore 10 MFRM licenes, and 2 artists are using Maya on their box. Now you can only render on 8 render nodes and the other 2 of your floating MFRM licenses are tied to those artists' boxes. So in our shop, our Maya artists understand this and put their machines on the queue for this type of rendering while also running Maya.

PS: I'm sure Cliff or Andrew from RFX would love to remind me that if we upgrade to Maya2010 then we will have 5 times more MFRM licenses lol hopefully when the next big 3D job hits =)

MFRM is loaded by the artist. You can run Maya without having it loaded; disable it in the plugin manager.
BTW, have you updated your version of FLEX? The example you gave, shows that a render box was using two licenses. This is not normal behavior, unless the render needed some advance feature for a simulation.

Each Maya license gives you 5 mentalray render licenses…. we only own 2 maya.. for the 10 mental ray render nodes

On Behalf Of Fatima Mojaddidy Sent: Wednesday, February 10, 2010 6:17 PM To: discuss@studiosysadmins.com Subject: Re: Mental Ray license problem Ahhh I see what you mean I think. In the case of Maya2009 (not sure for Maya2010) what happens is if an artist is using maya interactively, then you can use the MFRM license only on that machine. So lets say
you have 10 Maya licenses and therefore 10 MFRM licenes, and 2 artists are using Maya on their box. Now you can only render on 8 render nodes and the other 2 of your floating MFRM licenses are tied to those artists' boxes. So in our shop, our Maya artists
understand this and put their machines on the queue for this type of rendering while also running Maya. On the case of MayaMentalRay we only own 10 render licenses. We use Smedge, and with that app we can specify render pools. So only an specific number of nodes are allowed to render mentalray. What we find out after several tests, is that we can only have 9 nodes (10 render licenses – 1 client license) on the mentalray render
pool. Hey Rafael, not sure what you mean by mentalray pools exactly, could you please explain more? On Tue, Feb 9, 2010 at 2:07 PM, Rafael Toledo <rafael.toledo@trailerpark.com> wrote: I had the same issue and has to setup mentalray pools for different versions. On our case for mentalray, setup your render pool for license -1 number of nodes…. (we have 10 lincenses, so 9 nodes) Luckily it does not count towards the number of CPUs of you nodes… so if you have a node with 4 cores, that node will take only 2 licenses,
but render 4 frames at a time. For some reason, when rendering a Maya job using Mental Ray for rendering, some our render machines will pull two licenses.... randomly.... inconsistently.... does not matter if
it's dual quad core or single quad core machine.
Here are more details:
Version of Maya = maya2009-x64

Hi Fatima Check the actual file originalFilm_anim17_lightOriginal_v34.mb up onto an FTP somewhere. I would like to see how the shader networks are set up in this particular file. By the name of this it looks as it might be a particular lighting pass. Also let us know more about the pass you are rendering. Suspicious errors in licensing or in the rush logs do not always mean it is a license problem. Ran into this toooo many times in the past.
Also, if you are going to post it up onto FTP, please make it a .ma ascii file and not binary. We all have had to edit .ma files for proper renders before as Maya and Mentalray are still very buggy.

I spoke too soon, the problem is back:
[..]
derick ws214.hammerhead.local /dev/pts/4 (v2009) (license/7111 903), start Thu 2/11 14:55
[..]
min ws214.hammerhead.local /dev/tty (v2009) (license/7111 310), start Thu 2/11 14:23
[..]
min ws214.hammerhead.local /dev/tty (v2009) (license/7111 511), start Thu 2/11 14:38
Have you looked at the process table on e.g. ws214?Although the columns of data aren't labeled, I would assume that number
after the "7111" is either a client side network port number or pid (eg. 903,310,511).Either way, you should be able to ssh over to ws214, look at the process table
with 'ps fax' (linux) to see the process hierarchy to determine which processes
are responsible for those license check outs.(If those are client side port numbers, you can convert them into PIDs
with lsof(1), eg. 'lsof -n | grep TCP'.)If no processes are associated with them, time might be of the essence to
check 'netstat -t' to see if the connections are in an unconnected state
(TIME_WAIT, etc) in which case it's possible the render core dumped
leaving TCP connections behind in the 2 minute TIMEOUT state, or some such..

I'm not seeing the issue in these logs. Your flexlm logs show that you are using 5 licenses (one on the workstation and 4 on the renderfarm). Your ps output from min shows the mental ray render job being performed there. Your rush log shows that mental ray is running on 5 machines.
I can't see where a license is being eaten. Todd Smith Head of Information Technology

Hey Fatima,
Yes I saw that, MRFM will take one license for the ws and 4 for the renderfarm. The MRFMUnlimited license is pulled 15 minutes later, I am assuming at this point for something within the file that requires an Unlimited license to render. In which case the license server is correctly again grabbing one for the client and one for the renderfarm.
Without further understanding the workflow and the maya file in question, that's about as far as I can get.

Some where between
mental ray: got 2 satellite CPUs.
mental ray: got 8 satellite CPUs.
Some thing in the scene made the scene load the unlimited license.?
Re render but turn up the debugging on the render, I havn't had to deal with MR for a while, but we cant really debug it any further with out the scene.? If you can't post it I understand, but you will want to look for components of the scene that specify, some thing that unlimited can only do.?
It really does seem like a bug though that the complete license is not returned, I would bet autodesk would suggest you upgrade to 2010 to resolve it.
Things that come to mind, Is there a Mental ray for maya unlimited feature line or is it the same thing? Are you using referencing?? I can see that if you have referenced another scene file that requires the unlimited mr unlimited feature that might happen, if you are rendering with references take the scene and export it first before rendering, so you have a single file.
Whilst having mental ray renders hang on the farm is pretty common, and then hold onto a license you can see that render is switching from complete to unlimited.

Thanks for the feeback guys, can't share the scene file without permission from upper management. Greg Ercolano, Bill Shortell and are taking a closer look at why a random frame on random machines would hold on to a MFRM Complete and then later pull an MFRM Unlimited till the frame is rendered. I'll post something as soon as I find what it is.

Hi Team I still believe it is in the scene file guys. I've been developing software around these (buggy) applicatipons for years and have seen it too many times. SyS engineers hunting the problem down in storage and networks and on machines is OK, but as we see below, it has always been my opinion that machines can SINGULARLY behave buggy as they may have relic software updates installed (e-s-p-e-c-i-a-l-l-y Linux : (
Place a bet that the issues lie in the scene file Bill.
My guess is that there are .so files missing or corrupt specifically needed for mentalray and maya. ADDED to this is a bet that the file was passed on from perhaps an artist who authored the file in an earlier version of maya/mentalray.
Most of your machines like the file and just suck it up. But ode to that misbehaved machine which is coughing on it as it is missing some .so
Since it only takes 10 minutes to re-image the darn machine and wipe out the old installed and reinstall maya and mray, wouldn't this be one of the first things to do? Then you can always hire in the big guns like Bill and Greg....
