standardized linux distro (was Computerworld Blogs)

there was this effort, which was quite concerted at the time, and you can see how much progress has been made since ;)

heh. or not. sorry! apparently I hit an internal mirror of the old website from 2005, I should have studied the url more closely. Basically the idea was to get a consortium of studios and vendors together to settle on a few key distro components and high quality drivers. The Red Hat business model changes were one of the motivating influences here. There was a lot of talk at about it in the siggraph 2005 timeframe, but it never really got off the ground. It does seem like a worthwhile conversation to be having.

Beautiful :)

I've heard a lot of this from different people - it's been tried before, too hard, nobody will agree, etc, etc.

Well, we just can't give up, if we everyone truly wants to see benefits, there has to be a way :)

Somebody has to get it right some time - why not us...

I would like to see everyone on board, but if we have to start small and grow - eventually we can get there :)

Re: standardized linux distro (was Computerworld Blogs)

Those developing products for use on Linux need to be pressured towards things like LSB compliance.? There's never going to be one magic linux distro for all.? That's actually a good thing and I for one wouldn't have it any other way.? (The reasons why would warrant a separate thread.)

Compatibility across distros through the continued development and support of the LSB and other similar initiatives would be more beneficial to the entire community.

Though, perhaps one day we'll see a little embrace-and-extend action coming out of redmond resulting in MS Linux 1.0.? Then all our problems will be solved.? Maybe they could even kill the whole Gnome vs Kde argument by making BOB the default desktop interface.? How awesome would that be?? ;-)

Re: standardized linux distro (was Computerworld Blogs)

Hey Jeff,

I know what you mean and I don't think that we'll ever get to the point where there is just one distro supported by this community. No-one REALLY wants that either.

However, increased 3rd party support of a handful of current distros is probably more likely and would probably work best for this group. One of the beautiful things about Linux are the choices - One of the problems with Linux however, are also those available choices.

If the best thing to be gained is 3rd party standardization and commitment to a specific set of current OS builds - then that's a great achievement and is - in itself - a big challenge.

RE: standardized linux distro (was Computerworld Blogs)

Not to mention, we are not trying to change Linux itself or make standards for everyone and every application. We are just looking at the Entertainment production space (all of us) ... Not as large as the rest of the world...

I took a quick look at the LSB site and that is why I see things failing and being too difficult to manage. We have to take smaller bites...

How much of the applications any distro do we really care about or ever use?

For example, on our render nodes we just use Maya, Mentalray and Fusion - 3 software apps - all I really care about for that. But for render hardware we have 5 different types of blades (which we've purchased over 4 years) - I'd like to be able to push the same script and have them all set up exactly the same with the same version and software.. In a couple months when I buy more, I shouldn't have to worry about them working or not either or having to change my script.

Once the time is right and we are between major projects, I should be able to upgrade my apps and os version and again, not have to worry about fiddling with the scripts for each class of render node...

If we had a decent list of pains from everyone, maybe we can start giving them priorty and knock off some of the easier ones :)

While I agree the Linux Standard Base (LSB) is a really important and good effort, I think more important is movement toward a Linux Standard Installer (LSI?). The historical problems with Linux installs were based on their particular version of DLL Hell known as Dependency Hell, but the modern package managers have done a pretty good job of fixing those. The biggest problem is getting your applications on those package manager repository systems (different ones for each major distro) from the outside, either as a new developer or a proprietary executable seller. I know this is a huge problem for games developers who want to target Linux. "App Store" style services like Click'n'Run have made /some/ inroads in that direction, but not nearly enough for either consumers or proprietary developers.

Another problem with Linux installers has been the kernel's flexibility with supporting different hardware platforms. A lot of Linux software may work just as well on an ARM, MIPS, or POWER chip as an x86 one. The only current way to give the hardware vendors and crafty end-users the chance to do so is to give them the source. This is obviously a major roadblock to proprietary sellers like Autodesk and Adobe. One line of attack the LLVM project (llvm.org) has got me thinking about is a distribution system based on LLVM style bytecode. Bytecode obfuscators have been around for Java for a while now, and help proprietary Java software vendors feel safer about their distributions. I bet something similar could be done in LLVM or some similar compile infrastructure, where just the bytecode is distributed, and compiled to native at install time. Maybe even proprietary drivers (I'm looking at nVidia now) could be distributed in a more open fashion using this.

Those are my primary current thoughts about where development is needed. As far as outside groups making inroads, I think Novell is doing everyone a big service in bridging the gap from Microsoft to Linux. Yeah their legal could have worded some things better, but I don't think people fully realize what kind of inside attack Novell has managed against MS hegemony, in favor of OSI software. They have helped make some major strides in making OpenOffice.org a full replacement to MS Office, their servers are closest to being full replacements to AD Domain servers, and Mono is closest to becoming a full replacement to .NET infrastructure both in authoring and compiling. Getting end-users to adopt Linux will be easiest when they barely know anything has changed.

:) Jared

I think it's a worthwhile effort, however I suspect that Autodesk has
mostly made the decision for us. As far as I'm aware the only Linux
distro Autodesk will officially support is RHEL (which may or may not
officially include CentOS). That combined with how much easier it is
to deal with hardware drivers on big servers with RHEL/CentOS,

Currently we're almost entirely Ubuntu but ?

Here's a question for everyone so I can start a list...

Studios - What distro(s) of Linux and versions do you currently use (please indicate preferred) Servers, Render, Desktop

Vendors - What distro(s) of Linux and versions do you currently support (by product) Please include versions for latest version of your products and soon to be released products.

This would give us a good grid of what is being supported...

In order of popularity: RHEL/fedora/ubuntu/suse/debian,
and for a couple of special cases, 'yellow dog' and 'puppy linux'.
There are sometimes requests for oddball processors as well. The goal is to support whatever the users say they're running,
as there's many "experimenters" out there. Some folks like to
play with different window managers as well, as not everyone is
happy with the constant changes and bloat of KDE + Gnome.Linux is always a moving target, and kinda annoying from the
vendor's point of view.. so much can change between the releases,
it's something of a constant empirical process when it comes to
linux binaries.

For personal use and some servers, Debian.

For Linux workstations and most servers, Centos.

I prefer Debian, but RHEL/Centos tends to be better supported by vendors.

I think it's a worthwhile effort, however I suspect that Autodesk has? mostly made the decision for us.? As far as I'm aware the only Linux? distro Autodesk will officially support is RHEL (which may or may not? officially include CentOS).? That combined with how much easier it is? to deal with hardware drivers on big servers with RHEL/CentOS,

Currently we're almost entirely Ubuntu but ...

heh.  or not.
sorry!
apparently I hit an internal mirror of the old website
from 2005,
I should have studied the url more
closely.   Basically the
idea was to get a consortium of studios and vendors
together to
settle on a few key distro components and high quality
drivers.
The Red Hat business model changes were one of the
motivating
influences here.  There was a lot of talk at
about it in the
siggraph 2005 timeframe, but it never really got off
the ground.
It does seem like a worthwhile conversation to be
having.

I love the Linux desktop, but facts are facts.
Linux only holds a

the reason is
Microsoft's monopoly, but it's not just the
Evil Empire that's
kept Linux down -- Linux has done a lot of

Re: standardized linux distro (was Computerworld Blogs)

for my desktop I use OSX. 8) Apple should open source it, then
there would be no more 'which linux' to support/use stress. Teach
them the same lesson UNIX was taught. 8)

here at work:

HPC: debian

Linux Desktops: 1. Ubuntu 2. mix of everything, no policy here on what distro you use aside from "if you don't use ubuntu, you are
on your own".

Application Servers: 1. running commercial solutions- (RHEL due to
vendor requirements for support.) 2. running opensource solutions - debian

I use to be a big SUSE fan, but since starting work here, since its
all debian I've started using that as much as I can (to get up to
speed on it), but I've recently converted all my personal internet
servers to debian.. I like it, but they do stick things in odd
places... like /etc/bind9 for example. 8)

i'll never use linux on my desktop again likely, so long as I have a
choice to use OS X (or IRIX!). In another 10-15 years it might be
where it needs to be. 8)

I prefer Debian, but RHEL/Centos tends to be better supported by

Great. Thanks for that link... I will see what else I can dig up and start a WIKI on the StudioSysAdmins web site soon :)

On another note..

I found a configuration mistake on my server that was blocking a bunch of e-mail.. Some older e-mails just slipped back in earlier today. Sorry for those that needed quicker responses :)

I think it's a worthwhile effort, however I suspect that Autodesk has mostly made the decision for us. As far as I'm aware the only Linux distro Autodesk will officially support is RHEL (which may or may not officially include CentOS). That combined with how much easier it is to deal with hardware drivers on big servers with RHEL/CentOS,

Currently we're almost entirely Ubuntu but ...

RE: standardized linux distro (was Computerworld Blogs)

I use CentOS for development currently, but have also used Suse, Fedora, and Ubuntu.

As Greg mentioned, I pretty much just build whatever a client needs, including specialized versions and specialized hardware. I've found that using an older version of a fairly well entrenched release covers most of the bases.

That works for something like Smedge because what it does is really basic and low level and uses just basic OS services and basic c/c++ library operations. It's quite different for something like Maya which needs more specific hardware support.

Personal preference: Debian

Servers: Primarily Debian/CentOS (but everything from RH7.3 - Ubuntu -
Altix) Workstation: Ubuntu 7.04 (moving to 9.10) Render: Ubuntu 7.04 (moving to 9.10)

We maintain a single image for both workstations and render.

Desktops: WindowsXP

We probably wont go to Win7 until forced to by the XDK, or after SP1. Unfortunately, a lot of the game console-specific tools we work with are Windows-only. The programmers also use MS Visual Studio .NET as their IDE environment. I'm hoping to eventually put everything Windows in a VM, inside a new Fedora (whatever is the Maya QHL version at the time). We may use Novell SLED if it's on the Maya QHL by then. We have a couple of SLED 10 workstations for administrative purposes. The accountant is the only Mac (OSX 10.5) user right now, but I would optimally like to give the artists the option of using Macs, with all their Windows-only tools in a VM like Parallels.

Servers: Novell Open Workgroup Suite 2.5 Small Business Edition -- SLES 10 SP2 with OES2

We went with Novell because thier Gina for Windows allowed us to have a single LDAP authentication service (OES2), on every platform, without messing with AD. It's much easier to use OES2 for SSO on all our file and web services than hacking AD-LDAP strings. Their network file services are also more robust than CIFS. Anybody without a Novell Client install can still get on shares via SSL WebDAV behind the firewall. WebDrive is a good tool for mounting WebDAV shares as drive letters in Windows. Every other modern OS has a FUSE or WebDAV mounter by now. We use NFS on the server-server shares to avoid overhead.

I use Ubuntu 9.04 and OpenSuse 11 at home. All 64-bit now. I have a Win7 laptop but I'm changing it to multi-boot.

Re: standardized linux distro (was Computerworld Blogs)

Hi

Since I experienced CENTOS 4.2 and 4.4 at SONY Playstation in 2004/2005, I cannot go back to RHL or Debian/nbuntu etc.

But SOLARIS that is another paradigm.

Here is a piece of news for the SBUS guys, before PC's even took on the VIZ and Seismic Markets....

SOLARIS actually had cost only $5 per FULL CDROM x386 install back in the day (multithreading and all on the Pentium Pro 2MB L2 Cache Systems with a great tyam board) and I NEVER, and I mean NEVER understood why anyone would waste there time on Linux (back in the first year when people urgently kept up with drivers and such). For a while I did not even understand why it came too existence....

IRIX was NOT available for x386 during that time.... (can anyone correct me on this<?>).
